What’s My Credit Score?

For the very best services in banking in the Schiller Park area, we invite you to come by Leyden Credit Union at your earliest convenience.

A question we’re often asked is, “What’s my credit score?”

Your credit or FICO (Fair Isaac Corporation) score is a three-digit number between 300 and 850 that helps many businesses, such as lenders, landlords, and insurance companies, assess your level of credit risk.

Your score is based on these five categories.  Please note that the percentage amounts are approximate.

Payment history

This category counts for about 35% of your FICO score. Paying all your bills on time gives you a great head start on having a strong credit score.

Total amount owed vs. amount available

This category represents 30% of your FICO score and is a percentage of how much credit limit you have available to use.  Using a large percentage of the credit available to you can lead to a lower score.

Length of credit history

This accounts for 15% of your FICO score and is the amount of time you’ve been using credit. Lending institutions like to see a long track record of financial decisions.

Types of credit

This category accounts for 10% of your FICO score. Having a variety of accounts, such as installment, revolving, mortgage, etc., is good for your score but isn’t strictly necessary if those you do have are current.

New credit

This accounts for 10% of your FICO score, and suddenly opening several new accounts can reduce your score.

If you have additional questions or want to improve your credit score, Leyden Credit Union is ready to help with your banking in the Schiller Park area.
